Seventh Chapter & Trickster: The Re-birth of Third Stream Music
Sat 13 Sep 08
Australia’s most innovative brass ensemble, the ‘Seventh Chapter Ensemble’ teams up with ‘Trickster’ to present a night of confluent music that blends jazz and classical styles.
The third-stream movement, first coined by Gunther Schuller in the late 1950’s was used as a term to describe the synthesis of jazz and classical music. However, the movement seems to have been 50 years ahead of its time, with current trends such as post-minimalism, totalism and modern jazz adopting many of its ideologies.
In 2006, trumpeter Clint Allen commissioned local Brisbane composer, Thomas Green (www.thomasgreenmusic.com) to write music for a new chamber ensemble, ‘Trickster’, that mixes modern rock and jazz grooves with traditional classicism. This resulted in an extended suite of music for trumpet, saxophone, cello, piano, electric bass and drums that is truly eclectic, and a profound reflection of contemporary Australian urban life.
The ‘Seventh Chapter’ is a brass quintet (with drums) that mixes classical music, jazz, rock and hip-hop. Over the past decade, the group has commissioned compositions, been the recipient of numerous grants and awards and performed at nightclubs, bars, festivals and concerts.
