Calling all twisted unicorns to Brisbane Powerhouse!

Emma Dean presents

Broken Romantics: A Unicorn’s Quest For Love

Brisbane audiences are about to be reacquainted with acclaimed Australian songstress, writer and director, Emma Dean in the return season of her thrilling cabaret about heartbreak, healing, and unleashing your inner unicorn.

Emma Dean stars in the show which has been aptly described as ‘gig theatre’ and is supported by The Broken Romantics Band featuring multi-instrumentalist Tony Dean, viola looping extraordinaire Richard Grantham, and sublime backing vocalist Katie Swan. Physical theatre performer Jamie Kendall weaves in and out of the show playing ‘the heartbreaker’, a homage to ghosts of ‘boyfriends past’.

Based on Emma’s real life stories of love in all its strange, wonderful and vicious guises, Dean has decided to bring the newly evolved show back to the place it all began, one of Emma’s favourite venues – Brisbane Powerhouse.

So what can audiences expect?

“I have been writing and collecting songs about heartbreak for twenty years and this show is really a mixed tape featuring some of the songs that have nursed me through my most broken, romantic times”, says Dean with a twisted smirk. “Our aim is to take the audience on a wild ride.”

Dean is well loved in her hometown of Brisbane and holds an impressive track record of feature performances including the recent Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, broadcast around the globe. This year has seen Emma and her ‘Broken Romantics Band’ perform at festivals across Australia including Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide Fringe as well as a successful month-long season at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

“A highlight of the fringe”

★★★★★ Ed Fringe Review

“Dean’s unicorn-ego is no wilting cupcake, it’s forged in the fire of heartbreak, and bathed in the fury of her own awakening.”
★★★★ Musical Theatre Review

“Ringmaster Emma Dean is a hobobag full of crazy pills. Like the really awesome hallucinogenic kind…100% addictive”
New York Post

“Quirky, kooky and a little bit eccentric … that’s just who this breath-taking performer is and everything about her is glorious.”
