OUT OF THE CLOSET. INTO THE SPOTLIGHT.

10 NOV 2020

Brisbane’s newest company, ALTITUDE THEATRE, present their first show – OUT! – which celebrates a century of LGBTIQ+ artists taking centre stage. This heartfelt concert features songs written and sung proudly by their heroes, the very people who changed the world by coming OUT!

Be inspired by the masterpieces of Freddie Mercury and Elton John, by the bravery of KD Lang, the cool Troye Sivan, by the beautiful connection between Janis Joplin and Besse Smith and rock out to classics from Melissa Etheridge, Pet Shop Boys, Indigo Girls and George Michael. All while hearing a little of the heart-warming and heartbreaking stories behind this astonishing songbook of love.

Performed live by a stellar Brisbane line up including vocalists Lucinda Shaw, Garret Lyon, Havea McCarthy, Hannah Bennett, Aysa Garcia, Joshua Daveta and Lauren Kingham, with Music Director Luke Volker, OUT! is the unmissable concert event of 2020!

Altitude Theatre Executive Director Adam Gardnir said “OUT! is my most cherished playlist”. His motivation to turn the playlist into a concert is to “celebrate the long line of artists who have been brave and bold in telling our stories”.

Altitude Theatre Artistic Director Joseph Simons is inspired to direct the show from his heart. “These are the songs of our people. Some artists came out mid-career, sometimes with a thoughtful announcement, sometimes through scandal. More recent artists burst onto the scene already out and proud. We love them all”.

Lucinda Shaw, one of Brisbane’s most popular vocalists who stars in the show believes that “it can take a lifetime to find one’s authentic voice, speaking up in everyday life and singing strongly, tenderly, truly. Brilliant songs help us know ourselves”.

Garret Lyon, an artist of colour who will perform Sam Smith’s Lay Me Down, is “super excited to be part of this show, representing my mob, singing amazing songs with beautiful people”.

Singer Havea McCarthy often jokes about “being a ‘diversity hire’ but in this show, I can’t and I love it!”

Lauren Kingham, the productions youngest member, gets “excited just seeing two girls or two guys holding hands. I can’t imagine the joy I’ll feel being onstage with six other fabulous, proud, openly OUT artists!”.

Iconic Brisbane diva Joshua Daveta says “I won’t be pressing skip on this playlist”.

And Stage Manager Pip Loth simply states “Sounds gay. I’m in.”

OUT! performs at Brisbane Powerhouse on Fri13 and Sat 14 Nov 2020.
