The Pillowman

Presented by Shock Therapy Productions in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse

Comedies don’t come any blacker than this.  Thrilling, thought-provoking, horrific and hilarious!

The Pillowman is a gripping and wickedly funny black comedy, by acclaimed Irish playwright/screenwriter Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths, In Bruges).

Set in a Police interrogation room in a totalitarian state, a writer is questioned over the content of some short stories, which bear an uncanny similarity to real-life murders of children.

This provocative and thoroughly entertaining piece uses razor sharp, rapid-fire dialogue to explore themes such as oppression, control and censorship.

This dense content is dealt with in a very clever and masterful way, using comedy and a form of modern absurdism, to have the audience laughing hysterically at the most inappropriate of times.

Reviews

Theatre at its finest, grittiest and most sublime tonight at The Pillowman. If you're thinking about seeing it, see it. If you haven't bought a ticket, buy one. This is kick-arse theatre! Humbled to be made so vulnerable by laughing loudly and sobbing inconsolably

Amy McDonald ABC Radio Gold Coast

You guys are fantastic. Smashing show. Well well well done you! Best show I’ve seen in The Space!”

Marc James ABC Radio Gold Coast

McDonagh’s invention of a new comedy-horror genre and his virtuoso technical skill leaves most playwrights gasping
