Lior & Paul Grabowsky

Presented by Brisbane Powerhouse

The hauntingly beautiful vocals of Lior and the genius of Australia’s most distinguished pianist, Paul Grabowsky unite for one night only at Brisbane Powerhouse this August.

The collaboration sees these respected artists share the stage in a memorable evening reinventing some of Lior’s most cherished songs as well as bringing their own individual voices to the stage.

Melbourne-based Israeli-born singer-songwriter Lior shot to the public’s attention following his 2005 debut album Autumn Flow, which became one of the most successful independent releases in Australian history. Compassion, his collaboration with composer Nigel Westlake, won best classical album at the 2014 ARIA awards. His bittersweet musical style artfully fuses pop with the traditional tones of his Middle Eastern heritage.

Paul Grabowsky is an acclaimed composer, pianist and polymath who has received numerous awards in his illustrious 40 year career.

Don’t miss this celebration of Lior and Grabowsky’s music – a musical fusion between two of Australia’s most respected artists.

More Info

Lior
Lior is one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters, renowned for his beautiful voice and songs that radiate truth and sincerity. He burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album - ‘Autumn Flow’ - the album becoming one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian music history. Lior has since released a further four albums to wide critical acclaim. He is a multi ARIA award winner and nominee, an APRA Screen Award winner and Triple J ‘J Award’ nominee for Australian Album of the Year. In 2013, together with Nigel Westlake, Lior co-wrote and performed ‘Compassion’ - a song cycle for voice and orchestra set to ancient Hebrew and Arabic texts centred around the idea of compassion. ‘Compassion’ won the ARIA for ‘Best Classical Album’ in 2014, and was awarded the Austin Critics’ Award for ‘Best Symphonic Performance of 2015-16’ following its US premiere.

Paul Grabowsky
It is difficult to describe Paul Grabowsky's career easily. He has been a director of some of Australia's most prominent arts festivals, the composer of nearly thirty feature film scores, and several works of music theatre, the founder and leader for nineteen years of the Australian Art Orchestra, an executive at the ABC, and is currently at Monash University, where he heads up the Academy of Performing Arts. Whether as composer, teacher, television personality, mentor or advocate for the role of artistic expression as a defining attribute of contemporary life, for him this is all informed by his work as a pianist, and composer, particularly in the field of jazz, where, according to him, 'the piano never lies'.

His musical journeys have resulted in collaborations with musicians from many countries, not least with the First Nations peoples of Australia, and those journeys continue. Among his many awards are five ARIAs, the Melbourne Prize for Music and an H.C. Coombs Fellowship. In recognition of his achievements he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014.
