Beer Drinking Woman

Presented by DTC Management in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse

In Beer Drinking Woman, Vaudeville Vamp Christa Hughes (Machine Gun Fellatio, Circus Oz, Club Swizzle) has devised a mixture just like her drinks: straight up, intoxicating and eclectic.

A cocktail of 1920s bravado and the voice of a mermaid wooing sailors’ ships onto the rocks, Christa embraces her subject with wit, verve and charm. Join her on the journey from the elegant first sip of the Speakeasy Siren to the despair and pain of the Dive Bar Diva with hair-of-the-dog blues. Christa’s take on the night of a booze-soaked lush is hilarious.

Accompanied by the talented jazz pianist Leonie Cohen, Christa performs her own compositions amongst a selection from Tom Waits, Memphis Slim, Cold Chisel, Frank Sinatra, The Tiger Lillies and a few surprises.

“She is exuberant, exciting, inventive and above all, she kind of gives vulgarity a good name” – Barry Humphries

Part of Wonderland Festival 2018.

Reviews

Is there anything that Christa Hughes has put her hand to and not succeeded brilliantly at?

Australian Stage

Beyond the boundless bravura, Christa sings intoxicatingly well.

Sydney Morning Herald

With that powerhouse voice the show was exactly what you want in a cabaret - bawdy, hilarious and masterful entertainment.

RAW Adelaide

With Hughes' dynamic stage presence and that gutsy voice, this was bloody good cabaret.
