Effie
ABOUT THE SHOW
In 2025 Effie (aka Mary Coustas) will be bringing her highly celebrated and ever-evolving show UpYourselfness to Brisbane Comedy Festival, inviting audiences to tackle the hard questions and find a way to define ourselves through humanity’s ongoing identity crisis… the Greek way, with healthy debate.
“Currently there’s an ugly bitch-fight between political correctness & freedom of speech. Things have gotten hairy and scary.”
Join Effie as she walks us through the political and social landmines of isms –feminism, racism, sexism, wokeism, pronounism and goodlookingism – as we try to make sense of the latest version of human evolution without losing a sense of who we are.
“Truth is, life’s complicated…and so are we. The only thing that can save us is an open mind, self-love, a big set of balls and a sense of humour.”
UpYourselfness: it’s the oxygen mask we all need. Take it… youse/they’s/we’s won’t regret it!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mary Coustas is one of Australia’s most loved actors, comedians and corporate speakers. In 1987 she became a member of the ground-breaking stage show Wogs out of Work, where her Logie Award-winning comic creation Effie was born. This was followed by five seasons of the TV sitcom hit Acropolis Now.
Mary has also starred in the television dramas Wildside, Grass Roots and Secret Life of Us. Her diverse TV, film and stage credits are numerous. She has written two successful books: the hilarious and empowering self-help book for teenagers, Effie’s Guide to Being Up Yourself and her critically acclaimed deeply personal memoir All I Know which revealed her decade-long heartbreaking odyssey to become a mother. Mary’s personal journey was further explored in her highly acclaimed show This Is Personal launched at The Sydney Opera House in 2022 and toured in 2023. In addition to making it to the grand finale of 2023 Dancing With The Stars (with a bit of help from Effie) Mary has continued to take her bold and beloved character on tour to play sold out shows on the national comedy circuit every year.
