FUJI||||||||||TA (JP)

In 2009, Japanese artist FUJI||||||||||TA built a custom, hand powered pipe organ. The instrument was more profound than he ever could have imagined and allowed him to create an idiosyncratic sound world of utterly personal and unusual recordings. Performed live, his work is even more enveloping, his whole body working in unison to power the instrument. A new type of physical sonics that operates at a beautiful meeting between the material and immaterial qualities of music. It is rare music that exists as a lived-in dreamscape of limitless, rich tonality.

David Toop (UK)

David Toop is a musician, author and curator based in London. For over four decades, he has existed at the vanguard of exploratory sound, seeking that which sits at the very edges of our capacity to sense it. His is a music of haunted beauty. It is effortlessly deep and tidal in its hues and textures, a music that simultaneously hovers like atmosphere and shimmers like the ocean viewed at a distance. Outside of his music practice, Toop is recognised as one of the leading voices on sound cultures, having written widely about sound’s place in our lives, including the legendary ambient book Ocean Of Sound.

Loren Mazzacane Connors’ Performance  (diffusion realised by Lawrence English)

Generation-defining guitarist Loren Mazzacane Conners is one of the most iconic figures of the New York avant-garde scene. Since the late 70s he has pushed at the very edges of his chosen instrument, the guitar. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1992, he has reinvented himself time and time again, working with and against his physical limitations to create work that exists as truly singular. For Open Frame, Connors’ presents a brand new piece, Performance for four Fender amplifies. Constructed by friend and collaborator Jim O Rourke, the work takes Loren’s playing an explodes it outward. The piece will be diffused by Lawrence English on behalf of Loren.

Annea Lockwood’s World Rhythms performed by Lawrence English + Vanessa Tomlinson

Annea Lockwood’s curiosity of and appreciation for the dynamism of the world is long and well documented. Her legendary work World Rhythms, first performed in 1975, is an epic multichannel concert accompanied by Vanessa Tomlinson.

Whilst it has been available as a stereo piece published by the XI label, the work has not been performed publicly for over three decades. Working from the original source materials, Lawrence English, under the guidance of Annea Lockwood has remastered each channel of the work.

The result is a completely revised version of the piece, which highlights Lockwood’s unique approaches to found sound, instrumentation and spatial dynamics. World Rhythms will be diffused by Lawrence English and he is joined by percussionist extraordinaire Vanessa Tomlinson.

"The organ's sound is enchanting, and sensitively brought to life by the artist, who has evidently spent his time taming the instrument and bringing out its sublime, warbling harmonic and timbral qualities." - Issue Project Room
