ABOUT THE SHOW

IRTYU is the Ancient Egyptian word for blue; the colour of the heavens, representing divinity in ancient times. For me, it also means “I really, truly yearn unconditionally” (an acronym of my own creation).

As I constantly adjust, blur out and re-adjust to the chaos of the world around me, finding a way to work within its many warped systems whilst simultaneously standing outside them to observe and comment on the madness; and to create artful activity which brings people peace and beauty; I return to this truth. I really, truly, yearn unconditionally.

IRTYU is the name of my next studio release and my show for Brisbane Festival will be the debut performance of this work in full.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hannah Macklin is a multifaceted and well-accomplished artist (vocalist, writer, performer) and producer/creative director who has been creating and performing original music, performance and video, as well as educating and collaborating with a remarkable array of people for over a decade.

Winner of the 2016 Grant McLennan Fellowship, Hannah spent 3 months in NYC in 2017 (a city she’d visited twice prior) on an artistic pilgrimage, collaborating with members of Solange’s band, connecting with community and delving into the roots of the music and art she loves.

Hannah has played support slots for well-known Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote, Peaches (USA), Ibeyi (USA), Ecca Vandal (AU), Cody ChesnuTT (USA), Fatima (UK) and Katie Noonan (AU).

She has recorded session vocals and/or performed live with Regurgitator, Emma Donovan, Holy Holy, BIGYUKI (USA/Japan), Jaala, Laneous, Sampology, Allysha Joy, Barney McAll, Tom Thum and Paul Mac.

Hannah has used several aliases for her original projects, performances and releases, including “MKO” and “MKO Sun”, (Meanjin, 2012-2016), “Ha Na” and “Bastard Amber” (Naarm, 2017-2019). All her original work has now been re-branded and re-distributed online under her birth name.

Hannah advocates for diversity and dreaming and seeks to keep illuminating these with her art. She is passionate about healing and creation. A graduate of the QLD Conservatorium of Music (Jazz Voice), her vocal and musical stylings are influenced by not only jazz, but also R&B/soul, progressive, electronic and world music.

Her current band features Meanjin heavies Brandon Mamata on guitar and Sam Mitchell on drums, with Hannah herself on bass. The three create a dynamic blend of the styles mentioned above, with Hannah’s trademark vocals occupying the divine realms.

As a teacher, Hannah merges meditation and mantra-singing with vocal health, yoga and music theory for vocal, musical and spiritual growth. Her teaching practice is called “Shen Place” and is based in Meanjin/Brisbane.

"Bringing her familiar siren vocals, Hannah Macklin sings of breaking from darkness by finding companionship with our celestial counterparts... Ready or not, her music reaches into the depths of the spirit."
