A rousing aural, visual and sensory trip, Australasian Dance Collective and The Kite String Tangle’s Danny Harley hurtle us through a cascade of events towards a high-octane climax in Aftermath.

Set to a searing new score by the acclaimed producer, vocalist and songwriter behind The Kite String Tangle, Aftermath opens into a haunting world of disquiet, both familiar and unfamiliar. Through a landscape of fragmented memories and imperfect recollection, we slowly piece together the events that have transpired, accelerating towards total recall.

Entering a bold new era under the leadership of renowned Artistic Director, Amy Hollingsworth, the Queensland-based company has a focus on collaboration, empowerment and risk taking to create exhilarating dance works that push boundaries and speak to the soul.

Harnessing the talent of an extraordinary ensemble of six dancers, the company has achieved significant recognition through national awards, including three Helpmann Awards and three Australian Dance Awards.

About Amy Hollingsworth – Co-creator

Amy Hollingsworth is an award-winning dancer, director, choreographer and mentor and was appointed Artistic Director of Australasian Dance Collective in January 2019.

Classically trained at The Australian Ballet School, Hollingsworth rose to the rank of principal dancer by the age of just 20, dancing numerous leading roles with both Royal New Zealand Ballet and Peter Schaufuss Balletten in Denmark. 

Drawn to contemporary work, Hollingsworth went on to carve out a critically acclaimed global dance career that included working with some of the world’s leading companies, including legendary British contemporary dance company, Rambert, Michael Clark Company, BalletBoyz, Hofesh Shechter Company and Sydney Dance Company. 

Described by the UK Observer as one of “the most compelling and intelligent dancers on the world stage”, she won the United Kingdom’s prestigious Critics’ Circle Dance Award, twice – for Most Outstanding Female Artist in 2004 and Most Outstanding Female Performance in 2009.

Rambert also commissioned Hollingsworth to develop two pieces for its emerging choreographers’ season: Singh Language (2001) and Suspect (2002).

Hollingsworth departed Rambert in 2006 to be a founding member of Bonachela Dance Company, taking on the added role of Assistant Artistic Director in 2007.

Balanced alongside her performance career work, Hollingsworth choreographed music videos, commercial events and produced and performed in several films, documentaries and live art collaborations. Highlights included Assistant Choreographer for Kylie Minogue’s Fever Tour, appearing in Finding Neverland, stunt doubling in Primal Scream’s Miss Lucifer pop promo and starring in Bare Rooms, an art house film celebrating Lucian Freud, installed at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. 

Hollingsworth returned to Australia to join Sydney Dance Company in 2010 and received an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer (2010) in her final performance before being appointed the company’s Dance Director. 

In 2015 she choreographed Deeper Than Ink for then Expressions Dance Company, now ADC, Til Enda for Queensland Ballet’s Pre-Professional Program and Two Bars of Isolation and Hazed for Melbourne’s Transit Dance.

In 2016, Hollingsworth was appointed Queensland Ballet’s Creative Associate and Ballet Mistress, where she created Cadence, Interrupted for Dance Dialogues and NOOSA Alive! and Flux for the Bleach Festival, which was performed on a floating stage in the Currumbin Estuary on the Gold Coast. 

As part of QB’s Bespoke program, she choreographed Glass Heart in 2017 and From Within in 2019. Hollingsworth also assisted in the creation and production of Queensland Ballet’s 80-strong cast of professional and youth performers for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony. 

Since taking over the reins at ADC, she has continued to create – choreographing Arc, the large-scale outdoor work for Brisbane Festival this year and now Aftermath, with The Kite String Tangle’s Danny Harley and Jack Lister.

Hollingsworth’s skills in coaching, mentoring and developing both dancers and choreographers has been widely praised. She is a sought-after keynote and motivational speaker, panel member, industry mentor and creative consultant. She is also currently on the board of Brisbane’s Supercell: Festival of Contemporary Dance.

About Jack Lister – co-creator

Following his training at The Australian Ballet School, Jack Lister joined Queensland Ballet (QB) in 2014 and danced many featured roles in works choreographed by Christopher Bruce, Nils Christe, Jiri Kylian, Trey McIntyre and Natalie Weir. 

After creating his first work for QB in 2015, Lister quickly established a name as a respected emerging maker, recognised in The Australian as “a young choreographer who is going places.” He has gone on to create and present works throughout Australia, United Kingdom, China and Germany.

Fonder Heart (2016)was long listed for an Australian Dance Award, while Lister’s mainstage works Rational/Animal (2017) and B-SIDES (2018) both received critical and audience acclaim. 

Most recently, Lister was commissioned to create A Brief Nostalgia for The Birmingham Royal Ballet. It was also performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London and was heralded as “entirely original” and “of exceptional maturity and depth”. 

Lister was appointed Associate Choreographer for QB in 2019 and in January 2020, Lister joined Australasian Dance Collective as a company artist and his first commission for the company, Still Life, forms part of THREE, which was to have been performed at QPAC in April.

Lister has also collaborated with Director Ryan Renshaw creating short dance films which have been seen at film festivals worldwide. Most notably, their creations Happy Ending and Bubblegum have been screened and received award recognition at the prestigious San Francisco Dance Film Festivaland LA Dance Film Festival. 

Aftermath will be his second stage work for ADC as he continues to work with collaborators bringing dance to new audiences.

About Danny Harley – composer and performer

Danny Harley is a prolific producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and label owner hailing from Brisbane. Under his moniker The Kite String Tangle, he’s achieved a string of Gold certified releases and awards whilst being a prolific collaborator including recent work with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Fat Boy Slim (UK), Clozee (France), Dustin Tebbutt, Lastlings and Woodes.

As he seeks to explore his experimental side outside of The Kite String Tangle, Harley will draw on inspiration from his recent Berlin residency to create an innovative collaboration with Australasian Dance Collective. Upon winning the Grant McLennan Fellowship, Harley embarked on a four-month placement in Berlin where he immersed himself in the vibrant city, further tapping into his eclectic influences and experimenting with new sounds, artforms and recording techniques. 

An alumni of the Queensland Conservatorium, Harley originally broke out with adored singles ‘Arcadia’ and ‘Given The Chance’ as The Kite String Tangle, and has gone on to sell out headline shows across Australia, North America and the UK alongside appearances at world-renowned festivals including Coachella, Splendour In The Grass and Primavera to name a few.
