Writers+Ideas

Co-authors of the bestselling Saga Land, Kári Gíslason and Richard Fidler team up for an afternoon of conversation and storytelling, sagas, and extraordinary landscapes inspired by Kári’s new novel, The Sorrow Stone.

Born in Iceland, Kári has set his latest work against the dramatic backdrop of his birthplace. An epic and compelling novel, The Sorrow Stone celebrates one woman’s quest, and takes a sidelined figure from the Viking tales and finally puts her where she belongs – at the centre of the story.

Join friends Kári and Richard (Conversations with Richard Fidler) for this special Writers+Ideas event, featuring stories, sounds, and images.

MORE INFO

Kári Gíslason is a writer and an academic who lectures in Creative Writing at QUT.

Kári was awarded a doctorate in 2003 for his thesis on medieval Icelandic literature. His first book, The Promise of Iceland (UQP, 2011), told the story of return journeys he’s made to his birthplace.

His second book was the novel The Ash Burner (UQP, 2015). He is also the co-author, with Richard Fidler, of Saga Land: The island of stories at the edge of the world (HarperCollins, 2017), which won the Indie Book Award for Non-Fiction in 2018.

His fourth book, The Sorrow Stone, is an epic and compelling novel that reimagines the fate of one of Iceland’s famous women of history.

Richard Fidler is the author of several bestselling books that blend history with travel memoir and mythology. His first book, Ghost Empire brings to life the lost city of Constantinople and its dramatic fall in 1453. This was followed by, Saga Land, co-authored with his friend Kári Gíslason, a journey into the sagas of Iceland.

Richard’s most recent book, The Golden Maze, tells the tumultuous story of the city of Prague, inspired by his experience of the city’s dramatic Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Richard is best known in Australia as a presenter of Conversations on ABC Radio, which attracts a large listening audience around the nation, and is the most popular podcast in Australia.
