ABOUT THE SHOW

Acclaimed ensemble Bandaluzia will present their latest show in an exhilarating display of contemporary flamenco music and dance.

A performance replete with a unique range of creative influences, from the great canon of the flamenco tradition to inspiration from Debussy, Jazz, Radiohead and Contemporary dance. Bandaluzia subtly intertwines this inspiration into the flamenco language and story. Bandaluzia are celebrated for their powerful performances, unique sound and explosive displays of dazzling musicianship and virtuosity.

Bandaluzia performed twice at WOMADelaide 2023, Musica Viva’s country wide touring program in 2023 and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival curated by Slava Grigoryan. They were awarded “The Pick Of the Sydney Fringe” at Sydney Fringe Festival, and performed to a sold-out Sydney Opera House Concert Hall as an invited artist during TEDxSydney.

Bandaluzia are also highly revered for their ability to mix elements of other genres into their performances, whether being the rich harmonies of jazz, the exotic melodies of the Orient, or the infectious rhythms of South America. An experience that ignites the senses with the grace of Flamenco.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bandaluzia brings together some of Australia’s most talented dancers and musicians, including Jessica Statham (flamenco dance), Rosalie Cocchiaro (flamenco dance), percussionist James Hauptmann (James Morrison, Vince Jones, Bluejuice), and violinist Yuhki Mayne (Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Victorian Opera, Opera Australia Orchestra).

Bandaluzia is led by ARIA-nominated guitarist Damian Wright, who recently released his debut album Shifting Sands (ABC Music), which was named ‘Album of the Week’ by The Sydney Morning Herald and described as “glorious guitar playing”. Damian was also invited to perform as a solo artist at The Rajasthan International Folk Festival in India, as well as The Shanghai International Fringe Festival in China.

Bandaluzia is highly revered for their ability to mix elements of other genres into their performances, whether being the rich harmonies of jazz, the exotic melodies of the Orient or the infectious rhythms of South America. An experience that ignites the senses with the grace of Flamenco.

"...one of the most enjoyable and exciting exponents of modern flamenco."
