The Idea of North
ABOUT THE SHOW
Vocal harmony and festivity – a match made in the heavens.
This year The Idea of North have invited a constellation of premier choirs from around the country to add an extra twinkle to their end-of-year celebrations. Come and hear the quintet you love with the added magic of young voices from Queensland’s Voices of Birralee soaring above (some stars are more ‘silver’ than others). A heart-lifting, soul-soothing experience you’ll thank your former self for choosing.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
What happens when five accomplished singers, all whom have long immersed themselves in the undeniable beauty of combined voices and emotion-filled musical performance, combine their talents? The Idea of North is such a group of musicians, and together they create a sound to behold. The way they blend their voices is magical. The way they combine their individual storytelling prowess and finesse their tones to create a single, beautiful, multi-vocal instrument is transporting: it’s an experience like no other.
They win audiences over with a combination of impeccable artistry and easy-going charm. Music lovers are drawn to their incredible vocal arrangements, rich harmonies, playful stage presence, and emotional authenticity, experiencing performances that are as humorous as they are heart-stirring. This group is a national musical treasure.
The Idea of North’s journey is studded with praise and innovation. In the early 2000s they burst onto the international scene, winning awards around the world and exciting listeners’ imaginations with their enigmatic performances. They made history by being the first non‑American group ever to win the USA’s biggest open a cappella competition at the time, the Harmony Sweepstakes.
At home, they broke new ground for vocal music by taking out two ARIA Awards for Best Jazz Album (2010 and 2013) – notably, their 2013 album Smile was the first contemporary a cappella recording to win an ARIA. With a catalogue of fifteen albums, including two live albums, these musicians have continually pushed the boundaries of a cappella performance.
Today, The Idea of North continues to captivate audiences with its seamless blend of amazing voices, delivering meaningful musical experiences that need to be heard to be believed. Lauded by critics and beloved by fans, they continue to enchant new listeners around the world while remaining a cherished fixture of the Australian music scene.
