BRISBANE POWERHOUSE SEARCHES FOR TALENTED ‘BALANCING ACT’ TO TAKE ON COMBINED CEO/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ROLE

07 MAR 2021

The Brisbane Powerhouse Board starts a national talent search for their biggest role yet: a combined Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director to lead the next phase of artistic, commercial and precinct development.

Board Chair Valmay Hill said the board created the single leadership position to drive the organisation forward into a very exciting time in its history.

“We are searching for someone who can master the ultimate balancing act of achieving both great artistic outcomes and business success,” she said.

“They will lead and develop a talented and committed team in one of Australia’s most distinctive and exciting cultural precincts – a place of creativity and connection.

“With over 700,000 visitors each year and over 1250 performances and events, we are seeking a highly experienced and energetic arts leader to power the delivery of our vision.”

After six years at the helm of Brisbane Powerhouse, current CEO Fiona Maxwell will depart Queensland’s home for contemporary culture on 30 June 2021.

Ms Maxwell said now felt like the right time to move on, having steered Brisbane Powerhouse through COVID-19 and implemented a clear strategic plan for the years ahead.

“We were one of the first arts venues in the country to reopen after shutdowns and I am thrilled to lead the organisation as we celebrate our 21st anniversary in May 2021,” she said.

Ms Maxwell said she often reflected on the words of Brisbane City Council architect Peter Roy who re-envisioned the once-derelict Brisbane Powerhouse into a dynamic arts venue.

“He said the building would outlive us all and it was our role to look after it. This idea that we are stewards and custodians of its legacy has guided me during my tenure as CEO of Brisbane Powerhouse.”

Richard Evans of REA Consulting will support the board to recruit a new CEO/Artistic Director. Applications close on Wednesday 14 April 2021.
