Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse brings back the buzz of live performance in a reimagined venue for a series of intimate shows from 24 July.
Be one of the first to experience the fun and frivolity of a night out at Brisbane Powerhouse when the iconic venue reopens to the public this month.
Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse will surprise and delight audiences with a creatively curated series of bespoke shows and never-seen-before performances exclusively for an intimate gathering of around 100 theatre-goers.
The cabaret-style setting will provide the perfect platform to shine a light on the extraordinary talents of the world-renowned, Brisbane-based artistic companies of Circa, Queensland Ballet and Club Briefs, while audiences enjoy a platter for two and a bottle of wine, bubbles or Champagne during the performances.
Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director Kris Stewart said Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse will create a COVID-19 safe space for peace of mind that will connect audiences and performers, while ensuring we can remain physically distant, not socially isolated.
“Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse is about emergence; it’s about reminding ourselves what we mean to each other and remembering the value of art and artists,” Mr Stewart said.
“The fresh and original works from Circa, Queensland Ballet and Club Briefs are true to our recent experiences of isolation, but definitely not maudlin. The bespoke works in Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse are infused with positivity and joy and very powerful, performed in an intimate setting.”
Woven throughout are the shared themes of isolation, love and emergence offset with a dose of noholds-barred fun, thanks to Club Briefs. The Brisbane-based cult cabaret hooligans and mischief makers bring their patented party atmosphere of disco dancing, alternative variety and burlesque performances from the world of queer cabaret for the light-hearted wild romp we all need now.
Queensland Ballet will translate its world-first 60 Dancers: 60 Stories digital program, which features 60 new works created by 60 dancers during isolation for Queensland Ballet’s 60th anniversary in 2020, into moving live performances centred around the universal theme of love.
Also combining displays of sinuous physicality with reflections of recent isolation, Circa Ensemble will wow audiences in an extraordinary evening of new solo and duo circus performances accompanied by an eclectic music mix that includes a live cello solo from a member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
“The point of Brisbane Powerhouse is bringing people together to share these extraordinary experiences, whether that is connecting in our restaurants, or sharing in a performance in our theatres,” Mr Stewart said.
“The reopening of Brisbane Powerhouse brings it back to the essential nature of what we can do for Brisbane, which is to give this great platform, even in times of physical distancing, for people to socially connect and share experiences again.”
Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse has been made possible by the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Brisbane Powerhouse is one of six state-wide venues participating in the Queensland Government’s Venue Pilot Program, funded through Arts Queensland to pilot re-openings and deliver programming under COVID restrictions.
All events will follow Queensland Government Stage 3 COVID-19 guidelines, which at this stage limits the audience to 100 people. For those lucky enough to snap up an exclusive ticket to a Lights On at Brisbane Powerhouse show, you’re in for a rare treat.
