ABOUT THE SHOW

A Belvoir St Theatre and Kurinji Co-Production

By S. Shakthidharan with Eamon Flack
Directed by Eamon Flack with S.Shakthidharan

Ten years in the making, winner of 14 major awards and voted by over 100 theatre professionals as the Best Australian Play of the 21st Century (Arts Hub), this internationally acclaimed production by S. Shakthidharan with Eamon Flack comes to Brisbane Powerhouse.

On the banks of the Georges River, Radha and her son Siddhartha release the ashes of Radha’s mother – their final connection to Sri Lanka, and to a past they’ve spent years trying to leave behind. Finally, they feel free to simply be Australian. Then the phone rings, and the past comes spinning back to life.

Spanning four generations and fifty years – from 1956 to 2004 – Counting and Cracking is an unforgettable epic of migration, memory and political upheaval, told through nineteen performers from six countries.

Vast in scope, highly theatrical, but profoundly intimate – this is the story of a family trying to work out what they owe the past and what they’re allowed to leave behind.

Brisbane Powerhouse brings this landmark work to Queensland for the first time as part of a debut partnership with Queensland Theatre Company. This is the last time audiences will have to see this extraordinary play in its final Australian outing before this once-in-a-generation production transfers internationally.

This project is supported by Tim Fairfax AC and Gina Fairfax AC.
