JADE Ensemble
ABOUT THE SHOW
Immerse yourself in a powerful expression of cultural harmony as JADE Ensemble premieres their ground-breaking work, 響和 Kyo-Wa, Harmonic Resonance. The intimate concert set in the Powerhouse’s Underground Theatre will feature the combined artistry of Indigenous didgeridoo artist and musician David Williams, Japanese koto master Takako Haggarty, Nepalese tabla virtuoso Dheeraj Shrestha and guitarist/composer Anthony Garcia.
Through an immersive creative residency supported by Creative Australia the artists have improvised, experimented, composed and explored new transcendent sound possibilities blending ancient and contemporary musical traditions and processes. Kyo-Wa represents how the iterative process of musical communication and conversation can harmonise to generate new cultural frequencies and representations.
Established in 2019, JADE Ensemble’s musical trajectory transcends stereotypical notions of world music. From ethereal mindful soundscapes and delicate arrangements of traditional folk themes to driving electric funk-style pulsations, the groups open creative process generates a musical style that defies categorisation.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
JADE Ensemble explores the length and breadth of Australia’s evolving cultural landscape through a repertoire or original music and rare arrangements fusing Asian and Western classical elements.
Consisting of four core musicians, JADE features Indigenous didgeridoo musician David Williams, Japanese koto master Takako Haggarty, Nepalese tabla virtuoso Dheeraj Shrestha, and Australian guitarist/composer Dr Anthony Garcia.
The ensemble began in 2018 through an incubation and residency program facilitated by QPAC and Sounds Across Oceans and performed their debut concert Crystal Moonlight at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, as part of BrisAsia Festival in 2019. The group has performed and collaborated with an eclectic collective of international and local artists, presented lectures on intercultural music-making and cultural diplomacy and recorded a series of new tracks for the City Symphonies project for Queensland Music Festival.
