JOEP BEVING (NL) ‘HERMITISM’

ABOUT THE SHOW

A sensation of the contemporary classical streaming world, Joep Beving returns to his solo piano roots for a collaborative project with audio-visual artists Boris Acket, Merijn Versnel and Roxanne Percobic, built around Beving’s latest album Hermetism.

‘A quiet revolt against the madness.’ – Joep Beving

In Hermetism, Beving and Acket transform the classical narrative of the piano concert, the two artists giving voice to an abstract narrative; to their fascination of collective loneliness, to experiencing one thing all together, to becoming one mind as an audience.

The pure music of Beving comes together with two visual installations that seem to be measuring the unmeasurable things around us. ‘HERMETISM’ literally means the change in form, nature, or substance to something beautiful. This is what the artists are trying to convey; the importance of being together, and the meaning of experience that can be transformative.

With support from Australian composer/trumpeter Peter Knight and clarinetist, composer and sound artist, Aviva Endean.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

JOEP BEVING has released several well received albums, composed for film and ballet and in 2022 presented his return to solo piano with the album Hermetism. Beving’s journey as a pianist and composer came to manifest somewhat later in life, when in 2014 at age 38, he was drawn to his late grandmothers German upright piano. Minimal, gracious compositions emerged that would later be described as ‘simple music for complex emotions’. Two critically acclaimed debut albums Solipsism in 2015 and Prehension’ in 2017 followed, making Joep one of the most listened to living pianists in the world at the time.

PETER KNIGHT is a perpetually curious, composer and trumpeter. His practice exists in the spaces between categories, genres, and cultures. His recent solo work extends the possibilities of his instrument with innovative approaches that interweave acoustic preparations and extended techniques with electroacoustic processing via laptop, vintage delays, tape machines, amplifiers, and pedals. Peter is interested in the use of repetition, rhythmic overlapping, slow harmonic evolution and subtle timbral evolutions to shift our perceptions of linear time. His latest solo album, Shadow Phase is out now on ROOM40. Described as ‘a carefully curated exercise in reflective restraint, dreamy atmospherics, ebbing dynamics’  by Headphone Commute.

AVIVA ENDEAN is a clarinetist, composer, sound artist and performance-maker dedicated to connecting people with each other and their environment. Her debut album cinder : ember : ashes was released by Norwegian label SOFA in 2018 to critical acclaim. Reviews spoke to her innovation, virtuosity and described her work as ‘captivating, sophisticated, miraculous’ & ‘trance-inducing’. Her follow up electro-acoustic album Moths & Stars mastered by ROOM40, captured the imagination of listeners with its richly textured sound worlds; reviews claiming ‘Endean has proven time and time again that she is an expert of the aural adventure’. Aviva has worked with some of Australia’s most respected arts organisations including The Australian Art Orchestra, Chamber Made, TURA.
