Kim Gordon (US) ‘The Collective’

ABOUT THE SHOW

Music icon Kim Gordon (US) performs her new album The Collective, for one night only at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of Open Frame 2024.

Kim Gordon’s role as a culture provocateur is without comparison. Her work, with groups such as Sonic Youth, set the stage for a generation of female led post-punk communities that are perhaps best represented by the Riot Girl movement. Now, with The Collective, Gordon reframes her work in a way that both resolves her legacy and opens an entirely new chapter. Working at the nexus of devolved pop, guitar noise, electronics and steering, breathy vocal meditations, The Collective is a timely, powerful and evocative offering. Presented live at Brisbane Powerhouse for the first time with her band, they deliver a massively engrossing and arguably careering defining work that is resolutely for, and of, the moment we find ourselves in.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kim Gordon is an influential American artist, musician, and writer, born on April 28, 1953, in Rochester, New York. She is best known as a founding member of the iconic alternative rock band Sonic Youth. Gordon played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s distinctive sound and image. Her unique blend of punk, noise, and experimental rock contributions to Sonic Youth made her a seminal figure in the music world.

From the late 1970’s onward, Kim Gordon has maintained an art practice characterized by its personal and non-linear nature, embracing experimentation. During her early career under the moniker Design Office, Gordon’s work was dedicated to dismantling and scrutinizing established artistic conventions. This period defined her dynamic techniques and audacious exploration. The first ones took the form of interventions in private homes, the artist acting equal parts psychologist and failed interior decorator.
