Rosette and Badge Making with Rachel Burke

ABOUT THE SHOW

Allocation is exhausted. Tickets are still available for Flower. Puppy. Show., which includes a post-performance craft activation.

In this playful, hands-on workshop, participants will create rosettes and badges as bold expressions of celebration and personal storytelling.

Drawing on traditions of adornment and award culture, the session invites you to reimagine these forms as something personal, humorous, heartfelt and adorable.

Using ribbons, textiles, and found materials, you’ll learn simple techniques to construct layered rosettes and use a badge-making machine to create collaged buttons. Whether celebrating an achievement or something beautifully ordinary, this workshop makes space for it all.

Brisbane Powerhouse acknowledges the support of Cass and Ian George for making the Rachel Burke Artist Residency possible.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rachel Burke is a Brisbane based artist and designer whose practice sits at the intersection of craft, performance and contemporary art. Known for her maximalist aesthetic and joyful use of colour, she transforms everyday materials into intricate works that celebrate abundance, nostalgia and emotional storytelling.

Working across wearable art, installation and object based practices, Burke draws on a deep love of collecting, upcycling and making by hand. Her materials are often humble and familiar, from melty beads to tinsel, textiles and found objects, reimagined through labour intensive processes that speak to both fragility and resilience.

Her work explores themes of memory, sentimentality and the value we assign to objects, often elevating the discarded into something precious. Alongside her studio practice, Burke is an experienced facilitator, sharing her approach to creative reuse through workshops that encourage play, accessibility and experimentation. At its core, her practice invites audiences to reconsider the materials around them and to find beauty, meaning and possibility in the everyday.
