Installing World Press Photo Exhibition 2022

15 JUL 2022

Two days.
Fifteen hours.
Eight determined staff.

Often the unsung heroes, this is the hard work that happens behind the scenes by our production crew to bring World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 to life at Brisbane Powerhouse.

To give the exhibition the presence it deserves, this year the team hung the 24 winning photojournalism stories as a dramatic, floating gallery on our central Turbine Platform stage.

On day one they restructured the hanging rig and aligned the poles, frames and locks that would hang the images like an intricate puzzle. On day two they delicately handled the photo panels as they aligned and guided them on the new structure. Once all the images and captions were secured, the final step involved positioning and adjusting the stage lights above the exhibition to compliment the text, colour and shape of the prints. Integral to the exhibition, the lighting design ties everything together to ensure the work is illuminated, as well as creating an immersive experience for viewers.

These prints had been on quite the journey before arriving at Brisbane Powerhouse; traveling 16,183km by air direct from Amsterdam to Brisbane. The relationship between art and travel is long-standing and domestic and international travel plays an important role in growing arts tourism and strengthening our cultural community. We are grateful for the enduring support and partnership of Brisbane Airport in bringing World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 to Brisbane Powerhouse for the 14th year.

We invite you to explore the stories of courage, crisis and humanity hanging from our ceiling. Step outside the news cycle and experience perspectives from all corners of the globe.

On now.
