ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Presented by Michael Reid Beyond – the roving offsite projects platform of Australia’s leading commercial art gallery group – this group exhibition will mark the return to Brisbane Powerhouse of globally acclaimed multidisciplinary Bidjara artist Dr Christian Thompson AO after his epic photographic installation, Maya Barbadi, which was the centrepiece of his citywide outdoor exhibition for the 2024 Melt Festival.

Thompson will be joined at Brisbane Powerhouse by many of the most acclaimed and in-demand names in Michael Reid’s stable of represented artists and Australian contemporary photography more broadly, including Petrina Hicks, Nici Cumpston OAM, Narelle Autio and Trent Parke. The exhibition will also be the first opportunity to experience photographs from Tamara Dean’s landmark new series, The Flower Duet, after its widely celebrated debut at Michael Reid Sydney in February.

The creative assembly joining forces for Powerhouse represents some of the most important and influential image-makers working today. They are all represented in the most significant public and private collections in Australia and abroad, and their singular, boundary-pushing practice sits at the forefront of one of contemporary art’s fastest-growing markets: photography.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Launched in 2024, Michael Reid Beyond operates as a moveable projects space, hosting temporary exhibitions in artists’ studios, empty buildings, outdoor settings, regional museums and other newly activated sites.

All works from the exhibition will be available to acquire from Michael Reid Beyond. The gallery is excited to bring this unique creative platform to the dazzling industrial setting of Brisbane Powerhouse and invites art lovers and collectors to register their interest to receive early previews and first access to works selected to feature in Powerhouse.
