Brisbane Festival

Enter a space caught in a cross-hairs; halfway between your bedroom-floor at 3am and an otherworldly celestial limbo. Here, inside a field of laundry, explosive choreography ignites and combusts beside you as an army of dancers explore the dreams and the nightmares, the tremble and the limits of the female experience.

Sex, consent, violence and empowerment crash-tackle together in a full-bodied conversation where the agenda is Equality, Ownership and Individuality.

This is a raw, visceral confessional contemporary performance from one of Brisbane’s most prolific dance-theatre artists, Phluxus2 Dance Collective. Choreographed by award-winning choreographer Nerida Matthaei, Angel-Monster is a portrait, a requiem and a call to arms for sisters, mothers, angels and monsters alike.

Phluxus2 Dance Collective are a driving force in dance making, performance, and choreographic practice.

The collective was founded in 2006 to enable independent artists opportunities to create and perform new contemporary dance work that is, and for, a time and place. Today, the collective of over 100 artists has a strong vision to create boundary bashing and innovation driven work for performance, touring and events activation. The collective champions innovation through experimentation, seeking the unknown and advocating for rigorous choreographic practice.

The companies’ major works include the machine that carries the soul, The Opposite of Prompt, chinese whispers/broken telephone, Boiling Point, de-generator, The Paratrooper Project, Proximal and the annual initiative the indepenDANCE project. The company has been nominated and awarded numerous accolades including over 13 long list nominations in the Australian Dance Awards.

The company, in its sixteenth year, has had many highlights. Recently this includes returning from a powerful season of Angel-Monster in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, choreographing and performing a rock interpretation of Moulin Rouge with the Fortitude Valley Music Hall, premiering dance film Proximal and creating Up with Dune Rats. Phluxus2 proudly creates cutting-edge dance work for the stage, events, ceremonies and studios, whilst also delivering exceptional education, community and sector engagement initiatives.

MONSTER HIT! This beautiful yet confronting dance theatre piece [is] cleverly woven together … The dancers were exceptional… Angel-Monster is a brilliant piece of contemporary art!

  • MONSTER HIT! This beautiful yet confronting dance theatre piece [is] cleverly woven together … The dancers were exceptional… Angel-Monster is a brilliant piece of contemporary art!

  • A powerful contemporary dance installation... angel-monster proved prophetic in its hard-hitting themes of feminism, violence, consent and empowerment
