For over six years, Kurdish-Iranian journalist and writer Behrouz Boochani bore personal witness to refugee detention in Australia’s offshore immigration centre on Manus Island.

Painstakingly typed out in text messages while he was incarcerated, Boochani’s experiences were recorded in his acclaimed book, No Friend but the Mountains (translated by Omid Tofighian), for which he was awarded the 2019 Victorian Prize for Literature and became a household name.

Now, Boochani arrives in Australia for the first time, appearing live in conversation for his only Brisbane event to mark the release of his moving, creative and challenging new essay collection, Freedom, Only Freedom.

Hosted by Aleem Ali and joined by collaborator Omid Tofighian, Behrouz reflects on his own experiences and those of other refugees to offer a unique insight into border violence, human rights and creative resistance.

QUT 2022 Outstanding Community Service Alumnus, Aleem Ali has spent more than 20 years seeding and mentoring the development of leading initiatives and social enterprises that advance inclusion, belonging and justice for diverse communities.

He is the Deputy Chair of Oxfam Australia and a mentor and advisor to various startups, community enterprises and government agencies; including, Australian Human Rights Commission, Our Race, and Regional Opportunities Australia.

As the CEO of Welcoming Australia, Aleem is working with leaders and organisations across the country to cultivate a culture of welcome and advance communities where people of all backgrounds can belong, contribute and thrive.
