Expect the experimental and the unexpected.

Dead Puppet Society and Brisbane Powerhouse present THE DPS LAB, an evening of wonder and theatrical exploration showcasing three new short works from some of Brisbane’s most ambitious creators.

Exploring magic and tragedy, political disillusion and what it means to be human – audiences can expect the experimental and unexpected from multidisciplinary artists including Grace Law, creative duo BLAT Productions, and independent theatre collective Yours Sincerely.

Each new work has been created as part of DPS Academy, a 14-week workshop series that sees some of the city’s most exciting emerging and independent theatre-makers develop original ideas under the guidance of visual theatre experts Dead Puppet Society. Now in its fifth year, the DPS Academy is a unique professional development opportunity for emerging artists working in the form of visual theatre.

Dead Puppet Society and Brisbane Powerhouse with support from The Jelley Family Foundation and Arts Queensland, are excited to share the dawning of three new works that will tickle your imagination, challenge your convictions and who knows, spark some sorcery.

the program

How to be Human
By Grace Law

A show for those still figuring it all out.

Blending circus and spoken word, How to be Human explores the tension between our head and our heart. In turn playful and melancholic, this inventive and enchanting new production examines the absurd and upends expectations and dares to pose some big questions on life.

Ta da!
By BLAT Productions

An intimate family story about how we find hope from the people we miss the most.

On a cold winter’s night, a girl lives in a blanket castle. Alone with her grief, perhaps wishful thinking could bring her the thing she wants most? Relish in the wonders of a whimsical, imaginative world that enthrals audiences to find the light in the dark. This new work combines elusive shadow puppetry with original musical compositions and movement to create a mystical experience for audiences young and old.

Deep Breath In
By Yours Sincerely

A politician, a donor and a swing voter walk into a bar… only one leaves alive.

When a town’s air quality is so bad that a deep breath can prove lethal, there’s a newfound urgency in the political process. Deep Breath In transforms our system into a dislocated and dysfunctional body. What’s the prognosis for this ailing political body; is it terminal? Or is there a road to recovery?
